Residents of Bell Gardens who have past due rent can apply with the city for up to $1,500 in rent relief. Applications are due Sept. 15 by 6 p.m.

Applications are available at the Community Family Service Center located at 6662 Loveland Street, Bell Gardens, Monday through Friday, between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Applications must be submitted in person at the same location.

To qualify, the rental unit must be in the City of Bell Gardens, the past due balance must be from the months of August 2023 or September 2023, and the property owner must be willing to participate. Applicants will also be asked to provide an explanation of financial hardship.

Applications will be selected via a lottery process which will take place after Sept. 17.

Staff expects 80 payments, issued directly to property owners, depending on the number of applications.

“If you apply you can receive up to $1,500 [in] rental relief,” City Manager Michael B. O’Kelly said at the Sept. 11 city council meeting. “If there are more applications than there are funds, there will be a lottery process to make a selection.”

Successful applicants can expect to receive a rent relief payment as early as October, according to staff.

For more information, residents can contact the Bell Gardens Community Family Service Center at 562-928-2000 or [email protected]. Staff can assist with completing applications in both English and Spanish.
