The Downey Police Officer’s Association on Saturday, august 1, sought to bring a little fun to children. The association spent the morning handing out hundreds of toys to kids and their families during a summer toy giveaway in front of City Hall.

Around 9 A.M., a line of cars had already formed in front of the roundabout in front of City Hall and continued 3rd Street. Families remained in their vehicles while officers handed over assortments of summer-themed toys including bubble blowers, sports balls, twirling hoops and beach buckets and shovels.

The toys were courtesy of the local Walmart Supercenter in Downey.

The Downey Police Officers’ Association understands COVID-19 dramatically affected everyone’s summer plans. The summer heat is increasing and the DPOA would like to try and help cool down your summer,” the association said in a Facebook post. “We are fortunate to partner with Walmart, who provided water toys, to donate to the Downey youth.”

By the end of the two-hour giveaway all the toys had been given out, according to the association, and more than 100 families went home with some new toys to help make the summer a little brighter.
