Dan Hurlock is Downey’s new Fire Chief

Chief Hurlock was sworn-in January, 5, during a special virtual ceremony where he was accompanied by close family members. Former Fire Chief, Mark Gillaspie, administered the Oath of Office to
Chief Hurlock.

The badge pinning was done by Chief Hurlock’s wife, Kim Hurlock, and two daughters, Heather Ream and Haley Hurlock. Chief Hurlock concluded the ceremony by providing his first address as Downey’s new Fire Chief.

“I‘ve worked for the Downey Fire Department for 20 years and am very proud to serve the City I
grew up in. It’s humbling to be selected as the next Fire Chief and I’m very thankful that City
Management and City Council have confidence in my leadership. I look forward to serving the
Citizens of Downey in my new role, and plan to continue providing high quality emergency
services that everyone expects and deserves
.”

Chief Hurlock attended Rio Hondo College Fire Academy and was hired by the Downey Fire
Department in April of 2000. Chief Hurlock has held various positions within the department
including Paramedic, Engineer, Captain, and most recently, as Battalion Chief.

Throughout his career, Chief Hurlock has been involved in many programs including instructing
community CPR and first aid, teaching the Community Emergency Response Team program,
overseeing the department’s safety program, managing emergency equipment and apparatus,
serving as training officer for multiple recruit classes, and managing department facilities,
professional standards and data management.

He holds an Associate of Science Degree in Industrial Electricity from Long Beach Community College and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management from California State University Long Beach.

Mayor Pro Tem Blanca Pacheco added, “Chief Hurlock is a proud Downey native who knows
and understands the needs of our community. We have complete confidence he will lead the
Downey Fire Department with great dignity, respect and professionalism
.”
